Keeping an Eye on the News
As most of you know, veterinarians must attend yearly continuing education courses to remain up-to-date (and licensed!) on constantly emerging information. Dr. Tiffany Omler recently attended an advanced equine ophthalmology educational seminar at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. This was a special "Focus" meeting sponsored by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). The conference was a multi-day event detailing a variety of topics related exclusively to the horse's eye. Equine ophthalmology is a specific professional interest of Dr. Omler's, and she returned with substantial information regarding the recent advances and knowledge in this field.
There are several new and exciting opportunities for horses with eye problems, but Dr. Omler relates that the fundamental premise remains the same: "unless you have an easy explanation for an eye symptom, all eye problems in horses should be interpreted to be an urgent issue as most have the same original symptoms and cannot be differentiated without a thorough examination."
